Conduct Outcomes for Alcohol and other Drugs

Gonzaga University is an institution that expects its students to perform with excellence in their academic and professional pursuits, while being intentionally formed to value and uphold the ideals of social justice and the dignity of the human condition. To support this purpose, the University has developed a response to the improper use of alcohol and other drugs.

Some violations of Alcohol Policy or Drug Policy result in a minimum response by the University. The table below is representative of the University's established minimum response for such violations. Students should be aware that the circumstances of the behavior, the student’s prior conduct history (if any), the impact of the misconduct on the community, conduct outcomes assigned for previous findings of such violations, are all considerations taken into account and may result in the assignment of additional and/or more significant conduct outcomes. When behavior during an incident involves multiple class violations of the policy, the University may choose to assign outcomes associated with the highest level of class violation.

Gonzaga University also provides workshop and resources related to alcohol and drug education. These workshops, and other educational assignments, are regularly assigned in addition to the University’s minimum response to improper use of alcohol or other drugs.

Violations of the Alcohol Policy

Class 1

• Possession of Alcohol Paraphernalia - Residential Facilities: Alcohol containers of all kinds, as well as items used to facilitate drinking such as beer steins, shot glasses, & beer pong tables. All such items are subject to confiscation & destruction upon discovery.
• Possession of Alcohol in a Restricted Area: Possession or consumption of alcohol by of-age students in on-campus areas not specifically designated for possession or consumption of alcohol. See also: possession of open containers of alcohol in public places - Washington State Law – RCW 66.44.100

Class 2

• Underage Possession, Use, or Consumption of Alcohol: Possession or consumption of alcohol by persons under the age of 21, including purchase or attempting to purchase alcohol. Possession of empty containers may be considered evidence of possession or consumption of alcohol. See also: Washington State Law – RCW 66.44.270(2)(a).

Class 3

• Mass Quantities of Alcohol - Residential Facilities: Alcohol in quantities such as kegs, multiple cases of beer, or fully stocked bars.
• Drinking Games - Residential Facilities: Games and other behaviors that facilitate, promote, or replicate competitive, excessive, accelerated, or abusive consumption of alcoholic beverages, such as “beer bongs”, pong table set-ups, “shot-gunning”, etc.
• Acute Intoxication (Regardless of Age): Drinking that is dangerous or disruptive, over-intoxication, and public drunkenness regardless of age or where alcohol is consumed, including intoxication requiring medical assessment and/or transportation to a medical facility.

Class 4

• Provision of Alcohol to Minors: Delivery, sale, distribution, sharing, or in any other way providing alcohol to any person under the age of twenty-one. Includes hosting, or permitting others to host, an event in a residential space or other premises in which underage persons possess or consume alcohol. Violations of the Drug Policy

Gonzaga University, as an institution in compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, does not permit the possession or use of any drug that is prohibited by any local, state, or federal law.

Class 1

• Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: Use or possession of drug paraphernalia, including materials used for the manufacture, use, or distribution of drugs.

Class 2

• Possession, Use, or Consumption of Marijuana: Possession or use of marijuana or marijuana products, on or off-campus, regardless of student age. Includes being under the influence of marijuana leading to an altered state or intoxication.
• Misuse of Prescription Drugs or other Product: Using a prescribed drug in a dosage or manner other than intended use, or using lawfully available products for a purpose other than intended use (i.e. to produce an altered state of intoxication).
• Provision or Manufacture of Drug Paraphernalia: Manufacture, delivery, sale, distribution, sharing, or in any other way providing drug paraphernalia to another person.

Class 3

• Provision of Marijuana: Delivery, sale, distribution, sharing, or in any other way providing marijuana to another person. See also: Washington State Law - RCW 69.50.402
• Possession, Use, or Consumption of Other Drugs: Possession or use of any drug prohibited by any local, state, or federal law, or possession or consumption of prescription drugs or controlled substances without a prescription. Includes being under the influence of drugs leading to an altered state or intoxication. See also: Section 812 of the Controlled Substances Act.

Class 4

• Manufacture of Drugs: Manufacturing, growing, altering, fabricating, creating, or synthesizing any controlled substance, drug or other substance to produce an altered state. See also: Washington State Law - RCW 69.50.401.
• Provision of Drugs or Controlled Substances: Delivery, sale, distribution, sharing, or in any way providing drugs or controlled substances to another person. See also: Washington State Law - RCW 69.50.402.
